Marienplatz is located in the heart of Munich and is one of the city's most important historical and cultural sites. It is named after the imposing Marienäule, which was built in 1638 as a symbol of protection for the city. Surrounded by impressive buildings, such as the new town hall with its iconic carillon and the magnificent St Peter's Church, it creates an inspiring backdrop that attracts both locals and tourists. Events and markets are also regularly held here, giving Marienplatz its lively atmosphere. Stroll through the charming alleyways and round off your day with delicious Bavarian specialities in one of the modern cafés.
This masterpiece of late Gothic architecture with its characteristic towers is a striking landmark of Munich. But it's not just the outer outlines that are worth a look. As the saying goes: true beauty comes from within! When you enter the Frauenkirche, you are greeted by ornate altars and a colourful splendour of stained glass windows. A special highlight is the ‘mysterious footprint’, which is located in the floor at the entrance to the church and is known by locals as the ‘devil's footstep’. Legend has it that the devil himself was involved in the construction of the church. But see for yourself and visit the place that hides secrets and harmoniously combines the culture and history of Munich.
The Isartor is one of the oldest buildings in Munich. Originally built in the 14th century as part of the medieval city fortifications, today it is a place that brings visitors closer to Munich's culture. Characterised by Gothic architecture, consisting of impressive towers and the imposing battlements, the Isartor attracts many visitors. The Isartor separates Isartorplatz from the valley, a shopping street that leads directly to Marienplatz. So pay a visit to this historic landmark and take a step through the gate into Munich's lively city life.
The Gärtnerplatzviertel is separated from the Glockenbachviertel by Frauenhoferstraße and runs east of the street. The neighbourhood takes its name from the architect Friedrich von Gärtner. At the centre of the district is Gärtnerplatz, which reflects the diversity of the district with its lush floral splendour. In addition to small cafés and restaurants, there are lovely little shops that invite you to stroll around. Gärtnerplatz is a popular meeting place, especially in summer.
The Staatstheater is located directly on Gärtnerplatz. In addition to its historical and architectural significance, which dates back to the 19th century, today it is an important venue for Munich's cultural landscape. Operas, operettas, musicals and ballets from classical performers to modern plays and premieres of new works are presented here. The theatre hall also exudes a special charm and is therefore definitely worth a visit.
