Corporate Car Sharing instead of Company Cars

Often, company cars are used very rarely and sometimes even are just parking in the motor pool for a whole week without being used. Especially with department vehicles, it can unfavourably occur that the official car stands around unnecessarily although the neighbour department might have needed it. There is no exchange as everybody wants to have the freedom to access a car at every time. We will present you an innovative alternative today:

Stationary based vs free-floating car sharing

Cambio and Flinkster already offer stationary based car sharing, where the vehicles are parked in fixed locations and can be reserved longer-term before using them. This is perfectly suitable for business utilisation unlike the so-called free-floating system like Car2go, Drivenow or Multicity. Here, the cars are spread all over the rental area, have to be located via the smartphone first and can only be reserved short-term. This is only possible, if the company’s headquarter is situated in the city centre and the usage of the employees is rather flexible like for example with spontaneous short trips. The stationary based car sharing therefore is the more reasonable and also cheaper option in the most cases.

Company-internal car sharing

Using the stationary based car sharing in the own motor pool can have a cost cutting and an efficiency enhancement at the same time as a consequence. Approximately 20 percent less company cars are parking unutilized in the transport fleet while nonetheless more vehicles are available if really needed. The savings can be used for the maintenance, repair and cleansing of the cars or for fuel cards and automatic accounting systems. For the employees, an own booking platform in the intranet could be established for example, so that the vehicles can be reserved beforehand. Afterwards, a key manager could be installed which only gives out the respective car keys if the staff members can identify themselves with a valid driving license. If the employees also use the car sharing system in private, additional earnings can be generated.

But it can be expected that the workers will react against the implementation of a corporate car sharing at first as official cars present a status symbol and many will not want to give up this luxury. Furthermore, this model only makes sense with frequent but not excessive usage of the company cars, wherefore every enterprise has to decide itself if a rethink would make sense in the individual case. Nevertheless, corporate car sharing is without doubt an innovative alternative which is worthwhile a closer consideration.
